आतिदेशिका:  धातवः

 Your Costudent S. L. Abhyankar

==================

Before starting with Part 2 let us recapitulate what we studied in Part 1.

मूलधातवः, are धातवः listed in धातुपाठः which is an important annexure of अष्टाध्यायी.

Apart from the मूलधातवः one gets more धातवः in two ways” -

  1. with prefixes सोपसर्गाः (स+उपसर्गाः = उपसर्गसहिताः)

  2. आतिदेशिका: with suffixes सप्रत्ययाः i.e. प्रत्ययसहिताः

Note, आतिदेशिकाः धातवः are obtained by the सनादयः (सन्-आदयः) प्रत्ययाः affixed both to मूलधातवः and to प्रातिपदिकानि i.e. नामानि, सर्वनामानि, विशेषणानि.

One obtains आतिदेशिकाः धातवः because the culture of linguistics of Sanskrit seeks to provide for the formation of such words, by which a thing can be said by fewer words.  The आतिदेशिकाः धातवः, also called as सनाद्यन्ताः धातवः is one such provision. Note सनाद्यन्ताः means सन्-आदयः अन्ते i.e. प्रत्ययरूपेण येषां ते.

सनादयः (सन्-आदयः) are प्रत्ययाः. These प्रत्ययाः affixed for obtaining आतिदेशिकाः धातवः are 12. The first among these 12 प्रत्ययाः is सन्. Hence these are called as सनादयः. There are five modes of these आतिदेशिकाः or सनाद्यन्ताः धातवः as below.

  1. सन्नन्ताः (सन्-अन्ताः) desideratives

  2. णिजन्ताः (णिच्-अन्ताः) causatives

  3. यङन्ताः (यङ्-अन्ताः) and यङ्लुगन्ताः (यङ्-लुक्-अन्ताः) frequentative and / or with excessiveness

  4. ईयङन्ता: and णिङन्ता:

  5. नामधातवः denominatives.

We have discussed सोपसर्गाः, सन्नन्ताः and णिजन्ताः in Part 1. So, I have removed the word सोपसर्गाः from the title of this Part 2.

We proceed to study आतिदेशिकाः or सनाद्यन्ताः धातवः to be obtained from other सनादयः प्रत्ययाः.

(3) यङन्ताः (यङ्-अन्ताः) frequentatives पौनःपुन्येन or वारंवारम् is a major aspect, but there are more.

अयम् प्रत्ययः ३.१.२२, ३.१.२३, ३.१.२४ एतैः सूत्रैः दीयते ।

(3-1) सूत्रम् ३.१.२२ धातोरेकाचो हलादेः क्रियासमभिहारे यङ्

Note पौनःपुन्यम् means Frequent or with repetition. Rather, वारंवारम् means again and again. The प्रत्ययः is यङ्, which is affixed only as य. But obtaining यङन्ताः धातवः is not simple. There are processes प्रक्रियाः involved. I would not go into those.

Some examples will give some general ideas.

  1. भू (भवति) by यङ् बोभूयते is made to exist, is made to become or happen, frequently, again and again.

  2. दीप् (दीप्यते) by यङ् देदीप्यते is made to shine frequently, again and again.

  3. जि (जयति) by यङ् जेजीयते wins frequently, again and again.

  4. नृत् (नृत्यति) by यङ् नरीनृत्यते is made to dance frequently, again and again.

Note in the तिङन्ताः of यङन्ताः धातवः such as बोभूयते, देदीप्यते the parts भूयते, दीप्यते are similar to those of दिवादि (दिव्-आदि)गणः i.e. चतुर्थगणः there again आत्मनेपदम्. So a sense of passive voice is also inherent.

The धातवः have

  • a beginning letter e.g. बो दे which is some sort of a duplication of भू, दी

  • also with ऊ in भू becoming ओ, ई in दी becoming ए.

यथा - पच् + यङ् → पापच्य । अस्य लट्लकारस्य प्रथमपुरुषैकवचनस्य रूपम् - पापच्य + शप् + ते → पापच्यते ।

Actually the word क्रियासमभिहारे does not mean only पौनःपुन्यम् Frequent or with repetition, OR वारंवारम् again and again. It is better explained below.

काशिका  एकाज् यो धातुर्हलादिः क्रियासमभिहारे वर्तते तस्माद् यङ् प्रत्ययो भवति। If a धातु: is एकाच् i.e. has only one vowel and is लादिः has a consonant in the beginning, then क्रियासमभिहारः सनाद्यन्तधातु: is suffix यङ् affixed.

पौनःपुन्यं again and again भृशार्थो वा or excessively is क्रियासमभिहारः।

पुनःपुनः पचति cooks again and again पापच्यते। Note धातु: पच् begins with a consonant and has only one vowel.

Similarly यायज्यते is from धातु: यज् which also begins with a consonant and has only one vowel. यायज्यते means performs यजनम् / यज्ञः again and again.

भृशं ज्वलति burns or is aflame excessively जाज्वल्यते।धातु: ज्वल् begins with a consonant and has only one vowel. Similarly   देदीप्यते।

धातोः इति किम्? What is to be understood by धातोः ? सोपसर्गादुत्पत्तिर्मा भूत्, It should be मूलधातु: not a सोपसर्गधातु:. It may be appreciated that in Part 1 itself we did make a distinction between मूलधातु: and a सोपसर्गधातु:.

भृशं प्राटति। wanders too much. Here धातु: is प्राट् (प्र+अट्). Note प्राट् begins with a consonant and has only one vowel. But it is सोपसर्गधातु:. So one cannot affix यङ्.

एकाचः इति किम्? What is to be understood by एकाचः ?

भृशं जागर्ति। keeps awake too much. Here धातु: is जागृ which begins with a consonant but has two vowels आ and ऋ, not just one. So one cannot affix यङ्.

हलादेः इति किम्? What is to be understood by हलादेः ?

भृशमीक्षते। observes keenly. Here धातु: is ईक्ष् which begins with a vowel, not with a consonant. So one cannot affix यङ्.

There is also a वार्त्तिकम् सूचिसूत्रिमूत्र्यट्यर्त्यशूर्णोतिभ्यो यङ्वाच्यः ।

सूचि-सूत्रि-मूत्रि-अटि-अर्ति-अशू-(अ)र्णोति-इत्यादीनां ग्रहणं यङ्विधानमेकाजहलाद्यर्थम्।

For specific धातवः viz. सूच्, सूत्र्, मूत्र्, अट्, अर्, अशू, प्रोर्ण् (प्र+ऊर्ण्) ग्रहणं यङ्विधानम् काच्-हलादि-अर्थम् । For these यङ्-विधानम् is valid, because it is so specified and also they qualify being काच् and हलादि.

सूच् सोसूच्यते Note सूच् 10 U. (सूचयति-ते, सूचित) 1 To pierce. -2 To point out, indicate

सूत्र् सोसूत्र्यते Note सूत्र् 10 U. (सूत्रयति-ते, सूत्रित) 1 To tie, bind, thread, string together. -2 To write or compose in the form of a Sūtra or short rule; तथा च सूत्र्यते हि भगवता पिङ्गलेन; जैमिनिरपि इदमपि धर्मलक्षणमसूत्रयत् &c. -3 To plan, arrange, systematize

मूत्र्  मोमूत्र्यते Note मूत्रयति Den. P. To make water

अट् अटाट्यते Note अट् अटँ गतौ (to wander) भ्वादिः, परस्मैपदी, ०१.०३३२ सकर्मकः, सेट्

अरार्यते - I did not find any appropriate मूलधातु:

अशाश्यते - I did not find any appropriate मूलधातु:

प्रोर्णोनूयते - I did not find any appropriate मूलधातु:

These examples of यङन्ताः seem to have passive voice inherent.

In काशिका there is also a mention that यङ्-विधानम् is not valid for भृशं शोभते, भृशं रोचते इत्यत्र नेष्यते, अनभिधानात् ।

(3-2) सूत्रम् ३.१.२३ नित्यं कौटिल्ये गतौ

सिद्धान्तकौमुदी (२६३४)  गत्यर्थात्कौटिल्य एव यङ् स्यान्न तु क्रियासमभिहारे ।

Affixing यङ् to a गतिवाचकधातु: i.e. one, which has in its meaning motion inherent, will make the यङन्तधातुः with meaning of कुटिला गतिः not of क्रियासमभिहार:. e.g.

व्रज् → with यङ् वाव्रज्यते means कुटिलं व्रजति moves about in disguise, वाव्रज्यते does not mean पुनःपुनः or भृशं व्रजति.

क्रम् → कुटिलं क्रामति चङ्क्रम्यते

(3-3) सूत्रम् (३.१.२४) लुपसदचरजपजभदहदशगॄभ्यो भावगर्हायाम्

Note भाव means sense. गर्हा is from धातुः

गर्ह् गर्हँ  कुत्सायाम् (to blame, to censure) भ्वादिः, ०१.०७२३ आत्मनेपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

गर्ह् गर्हँ  विनिन्दने (to blame, to criticize) चुरादिः, १०.०३८३ उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

So यङन्ताः of these धातव: are भावगर्हा: i.e. they have the abhorable sense.

Actually the धातव: लुप सद चर जप जभ दह दश are consonant-ending. These are made अ-ending for ease of pronunciation and to avoid सन्धि-effects, which would have become confusing. Explanation of the सूत्रम् in काशिका is as follows ⇒

काशिका - लुप सद चर जप जभ दह दश गॄ इत्येतेभ्यो भावगर्हायां धात्वर्थगर्हायां यङ् प्रत्ययो भवति।

लुप् गर्हितं लुम्पति लोलुप्यते। Note

  • लुप् लुपँ विमोहने (to be confused, to be afraid) दिवादिः, ०४.०१५० परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

  • लुप् लुपॢँ छेदने (to cut, to break, to slice) तुदादिः, ०६.०१६७ उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्

सद् → गर्हितं सीदति सासद्यते. Note

  • सद् षदॢँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु (to go, to lose power, to be tired, to dry up, to destroy, to wither, to despond, to lose interest) भ्वादिः, ०१.०९९० परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्

  • सद् षदॢँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु (to go, to lose energy, to move, to be sad) तुदादिः, ०६.०१६३ परस्मैपदी, अकर्मकः, अनिट्

  • सद् षदँ पद्यर्थे (to attack, to climb, to go) चुरादिः, १०.०३६८ उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

चर् → चञ्चूर्यते । Note

  • चर् चरँ गतौ भक्षणे च  (to go, to walk, to eat, to graze)भ्वादिः, ०१.०६४० परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

  • चर् चरँ संशये (to doubt) चुरादिः, १०.०२७४ उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

जप् → जञ्जप्यते। Note जप् जपँ व्यक्तायां वाचि मानसे च (to speak, to meditate, to mutter, to speak nonsense) भ्वादिः, ०१.०४६३ परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

जभ् जञ्जभ्यते। Note जभ् जभीँ गात्रविनामे (to yawn, to gape) भ्वादिः, ०१.०४५३ आत्मनेपदी, अकर्मकः, सेट्

दह् दन्दह्यते। Note दह् दहँ भस्मीकरणे (to reduce to ashes, to burn, to destroy, to cause pain) भ्वादिः, ०१.११४६ परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्

दश् दन्दश्यते। It seems this धातुः दश् is actually

  • दंश् दन्शँ दशने (to bite, to sting) भ्वादिः, ०१.११४४ परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्

  • दंश् दशिँ दंशने (to bite, to sting) चुरादिः, १०.०१९३ आत्मनेपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

  • दंश् दशिँ भाषायाम् (to speak, to talk) चुरादिः, १०.०२९५ आत्मनेपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

  • दन्दश्यते means stings or bites again and again or stings or bites severely.

गॄ जेगिल्यते। Note

  • गॄ निगरणे (to eat, to swallow) तुदादिः, ०६.०१४६ परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

  • गॄ शब्दे (to sound, to talk) क्र्यादिः, ०९.००३३ परस्मैपदी, अकर्मकः, सेट्

(3-a) यङ्लुगन्ताः (यङ्-लुक्-अन्ताः) These are also frequentatives

Clear mention of यङ्-लुक् is in सूत्रम् (7-4-82) गुणो यङ्लुकोः In further सूत्राणि there are diktats about both यङ् and यङ्लुक् i.e. यङि यङ्लुकि च

काशिका   यङि यङ्लुकि च इगन्तस्य अभ्यासस्य गुणो भवति। चेचीयते। लोलूयते। यङ्लुकि जोहवीति। यगो वा इति इड्विकल्पः। चोक्रुशीति।

Note चेचीयते and लोलूयते are यङन्ताः of चि and लू respectively.

चि चिञ् चयने (to collect, to select, to pick) स्वादिः, ०५.०००५ उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्

चि चिञ् चयने (to find, to gather, to collect) चुरादिः, १०.०१२४ उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

चि चि भाषायाम् (to speak, to talk) चुरादिः, १०.०३२५ उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

लू लूञ् छेदने (to cut, to pluck, to destroy, to dissolve) क्र्यादिः, ०९.००१६ उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

जोहवीति and चोक्रुशीति are examples of यङ्लुक् and are from हु and क्रुश् respectively.

हु हु दानादयोः आदाने प्रीणने च (to sacrifice, to eat, to consume) जुहोत्यादिः, ०३.०००१ परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्

क्रुश् क्रुशँ आह्वाने रोदने च (to call out, to shout, to cry) भ्वादिः, ०१.०९९२ परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्

The main frequentative प्रत्ययः is यङ् but in यङ्लुक् it is taken to be in लुक्-state, i.e. invisible. See a few examples.

  • भू (भवति) by यङ्लुक् बोभवीति exists, becomes, frequently, again and again.

  • स्पर्ध् (स्पर्धते) by यङ्लुक् पास्पर्धति competes frequently, again and again.

  • कृ (करोति) by यङ्लुक् चर्करीति does frequently, again and again.

  • चर् → चञ्चूरीति ।

प्रत्ययः यङ् affixes as य, which seems to lend some sense of change of voice from the active voice.

But in यङ्लुक् the य is invisible i.e. absent. So, the sense of change of voice is not there. So यङ्लुगन्ताः seem to have active voice कर्तरिप्रयोगः, accordingly परस्मैपदम् seems to be prominent. But the shades of meaning of यङ् i.e. क्रियासमभिहार: i.e. पौनःपुन्यं again and again भृशार्थो वा or excessively, भावगर्हा abhorrent or otherwise sense, these are certainly there. That is why यङ्लुक् is a variant of यङ्.

(4) ईयङन्तः (ईयङ्-अन्तः) धातुः ऋत्

अयम् प्रत्ययः (३.१.२९) ऋतेरीयङ् अनेन सूत्रेण दीयते ।

This ईयङ्-प्रत्ययः is specified for only one धातुः ऋत्

It is affixed as ईय

यथा - ऋत् + य(ङ्) → ऋतीय । अस्य लट्लकारस्य प्रथमपुरुषैकवचनस्य रूपम् - ऋतीय + शप् + ते → ऋतीयते ।

In ashtadhyayi.com also it is mentioned that अयम् धातुः 'सौत्रः' धातुः अस्ति (धातुपाठे नैव विद्यते इत्याशयः) ।

ऋत् ऋति जुगुप्सायां कृपायां च  (to pity, to hate, to criticize, to abuse, to favour) भ्वादिः, ०१.११६६ आत्मनेपदी, अकर्मकः, सेट्

The logic of mentioning it as भ्वादिः seems to be that with ईय(ङ्), ऋत् becomes ऋतीय

Note in Apte’s dictionary ऋत् 1Ā. ऋतीयते (a सौत्र root) 1 To reproach, contemn. -2 To pity. -3 To go. -4 To rival; have power.

This is called as a सौत्रधातुः because it is detailed only by this सूत्रम् (३.१.२९) ऋतेरीयङ् not in धातुपाठ:.

The English meanings given in Apte’s dictionary or in ashtadhyayi.com appeal to be subjective as interpreted by the authors. These may not be the exact meanings. It would be good to see examples of the usages in Sanskrit literature. In शब्दकल्पद्रुमः ऋत् गत्याम् To go । स्पर्द्धने To rival । ऐश्वर्य्ये । घृणायाम् To reproach ।

The णिङ्-प्रत्ययः is affixed as इ only. But its grammatical name is णिङ्, different from णिच् which also is affixed as इ. णिच् as causative has applicability with large number of धातवः.

Usage of णिङ् is limited and is detailed in two aphorisms. Note an interesting explanation about णिङ् that ङकार आत्मनेपदार्थः।

१.२० details णिङन्ताः धातवः obtainable from the three nouns पुच्छ भाण्ड चीवर

(1) पुच्छ - Note पुच्छः पुच्छम् 1 A tail in general

पुच्छादुदसने (पुच्छात् उदसने) पर्यसने वा। उत्पुच्छयते raises the tail or परिपुच्छयते wags the tail.

(2) भाण्ड - Note भाण्डम् [भाण्ड्-अच् भण्-ड स्वार्थे अण् वा Tv.] 1 A vessel, pot, utensil (plate, dish, can &c.) भाण्डात् समाचयने in the sense of storage or collection. Hence सम्भाण्डयते means puts, stores, collects in a vessel.

(3) चीवर - Note चीवरम् [चि-ष्वरच् नि˚ दीर्घः; चीव्-अरच् वा; cf. Uṇ.3.1] 1 A garment (in general); a tatter, rag; -2 The dress of any mendicant.

चीवरादर्जने (चीवरात् अर्जने) परिधाने वा Getting or wearing a cloth सञ्चीवरयते भिक्षुः a mendicant gets and wears a cloth.

सूत्रम् ३.१.३० कमेर्णिङ् (कमेः णिङ्)

कमेर्धातोः णिङ् प्रत्ययो भवति (कमे: धातोः णिङ् प्रत्यय: भवति)

Note कमे: is 6/1 of कमि, which is the grammatical name of the धातुः In ashtadhyayi.com कम् is detailed as कम् कमुँ कान्तौ (to love, to desire, to long for, to have intercourse with) भ्वादिः, ०१.०५११ आत्मनेपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्

णकारो वृद्ध्यर्थः। ङकार आत्मनेपदार्थः। कामयते, कामयेते, कामयन्ते।

यथा - कम् + णिङ् → कामि । अस्य लट्लकारस्य प्रथमपुरुषैकवचनस्य रूपम् - कामि + शप् + ते → कामयते ।

The णिङन्त: कम् + णिङ् becomes कामि and has तिङन्ताः कामयते etc.

In Apte’s dictionary कम् 1, 10. Ā. (कामयते, कामित, चकमे-कामयाञ्चक्रे, कान्त) 1 To love, be enamored of, be in love with; कन्ये कामयमानं मां न त्वं कामयसे कथम् Kāv.1.63 (an instance of ग्राम्यता); कलहंसको मन्दारिकां कामयते Māl.1. -2 To long for, wish, desire; न वीरसूशब्दमकामयेताम् R.14.4.; निष्क- ष्टुमर्थं चकमे कुबेरात् 5.26; 4.48; 10.53; Bk.14.82. -3 To have intercourse with; त्वं च मा वरुण कामयासे Rv.10.124.5. -4 To value highly.

Note सूत्रम् ३.१.३० details णिङ् of कम्.

All in all णिङ् has usage to get णिङन्ताः धातवः in four instances (a) from the three nouns पुच्छ भाण्ड चीवर and (b) from the मूलधातुः धातुः कम्.

णिङन्ताः धातवः obtained from the three nouns पुच्छ भाण्ड चीवर is an introduction to the concept of obtaining नामधातवः as a special and specific variety of आतिदेशिकाः धातवः.

नामधातवः are सनाद्यन्ताः धातवः obtained from nouns, rather from प्रातिपदिकानि i.e. नामानि, सर्वनामानि, विशेषणानि.

On the whole out of 12 सनादि-प्रत्ययाः we have thus far studied (1) सन्, (2) णिच्, (3) यङ्, (3-a) यङ्लुक्, (4) ईयङ् and (5) णिङ्. We have yet to study 7 more. With those remaining seven, one primarily obtains नामधातवः.

We would rather take another breather here.

 शुभमस्तु !
