Essential Basics Before Embarking on studying अष्टाध्यायी

Notes By अष्टाध्यायी-Student S. L. Abhyankar

===============

We have to carry forward this study of essential basics to get a bird’s eye view about प्रत्ययाः and धातवः and at the same time staying connected with the इत्-सूत्रम् 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते

In अष्टाध्यायी detailed study of प्रत्ययाः starts from the सूत्रम् 3-1-1 प्रत्यय:

This सूत्रम् has just this single word प्रत्यय:. Obviously there is no different पदपाठः. There is no अनुवृत्तिः of any other word from any previous सूत्रम्. How does one interpret such a सूत्रम् ?

In the book I have,  the सूत्रम् is written as

सूत्रम् 3-1-1 प्रत्यय: (5-4-160)

Since there is सूत्रक्रमाङ्कः (5-4-160), does it mean that the word प्रत्यय: has to have अनुवृत्तिः in all सूत्राणि up to (5-4-160) ? If so, in how many सूत्राणि will the अनुवृत्तिः be ?

Actually सूत्रम् 3-1-1 प्रत्यय: means a declaration, “Here starts delineation about प्रत्यय:” It is an announcement of the topic. So from सूत्रम् 3-1-1 to सूत्रम् 5-4-160 is the domain अधिकार: of the topic प्रत्ययः. The domain encompasses three अध्याया: 3, 4, 5, i.e. across 12 पादा:, in turn across (150+188+176+117) + (178+145+168+144) + (136+140+119+160) = 1821 सूत्राणि !

The word प्रत्यय: in सूत्रम् 3-1-1 is the अधिकार-word and सूत्रम् 3-1-1 प्रत्यय: is an अधिकार-सूत्रम्.

But प्रत्ययाः are of many types. As we have already seen there are 21 सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः and 18 तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः, so totally 39 विभक्ति-प्रत्ययाः contained in द्वे सूत्रे - in

सूत्रम् ४.१.२ स्वौँजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाङ्ङ्योस्सुप् and

सूत्रम् ३.४.७८ तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्-तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्.

As may be noticed, the सूत्रक्रमाङ्कौ of these द्वे सूत्रे are (3-4-78) and (4-1-2) i.e. within the domain of सूत्रम् 3-1-1 प्रत्यय: (5-4-160)

Main types of प्रत्ययाः delineated in the domain are (1) सन्नादय: (2) कृत्-प्रत्ययाः (3) तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः (4) सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः (5) स्त्रीप्रत्यया: (6) तद्धित-प्रत्ययाः.

Let me give a bird’s eye view.

  1. सन्नादय: प्रत्ययाः are - सन् क्यच् काम्यच् क्यङ् क्यष् क्यच् णिङ् णिच् यङ् यक् आय ईयङ् also with some variants such as यङ्-लुक्.

    1. These प्रत्ययाः are suffixed to धातवः to obtain newer धातवः called as आतिदेशिकाः धातवः. Literal meaning of आतिदेशिकाः means ‘extending the territory’.

    2. For example the प्रत्यय: सन् obtains an इच्छार्थकः आतिदेशिकधातुः. See कृ (करोति does) → चिकीर्षति means कर्तुम् इच्छति wishes to do.

    3. Note the concept of सन्नादय: प्रत्ययाः underscores the culture inherent to Sanskrit language that what is to be said should be with as few syllables as possible. Even in गीता one finds mention of the phrase यः पश्यति स पश्यति “He who sees, sees” three times. Sanskrit should be learnt and studied by understanding the culture of the Sanskrit language. The word सुँप् rather, this (आदिरन्त्येन सहेता)-संज्ञा connotes as many as 21 सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः.

    4. Some of the सन्नादय: प्रत्ययाः are also affixed to नामानि to get नामधातवः. For example see this quote निरस्तपादपे देशे एरण्डोऽपि द्रुमायते. In a desert or barren land निरस्तपादपे देशे a eucalyptus tree एरण्ड: also अपि is seen as a tree द्रुमायते. Note द्रुम: [द्रुः शाखास्त्यस्य-मः, cf. P.V.2.108] - A tree. द्रुम: is a noun. द्रुमाय is a नामधातुः meaning ‘to be seen as a tree’. See how a long-winding meaning is condensed. That is the culture of the Sanskrit language.

  2. कृत्-प्रत्ययाः - Let me appraise that delineation about कृत्-प्रत्ययाः starts with  सूत्रम् ३.१.९३ कृदतिङ् i.e. कृत्-अतिङ् (३.४.७७) which means कृत् is an  अधिकार-word and the domain the अधिकार: encompasses (58+188+176+77 = 499) सूत्राणि.

    1. Because कृत् is an  अधिकार-word within the domain of सूत्रम् 3-1-1 प्रत्यय: (5-4-160) let us call it to be a sub-domain उपाधिकारः.

    2. As if this domain अधिकार: of 499 सूत्राणि of कृत्-प्रत्ययाः is not small enough, within this अधिकार: is सूत्रम् ३-३-१ उणादयो बहुलम् (उण्-आदयः बहुलम्). The उण्-आदयः प्रत्ययाः are so many बहुलम्, that there is a separate appendix known as उणादिपाठ: having पञ्च अध्यायाः with (157+123+160+238+70 = 748) सूत्राणि.

    3. Since there are 6 main types of प्रत्ययाः mentioned above, there are at least as many उपाधिकारा: within the vast domain of प्रत्यय:.

    4. But उणादिपाठ: is a subdomain of the उपाधिकारः कृत्-प्रत्ययाः. That would give some idea of the structure of अष्टाध्यायी. This is similar to the loops within loop structure in computer programming code.

    5. All in all कृत्-प्रत्ययाः are suffixes which affix to धातवः. That is the significance of the word कृदतिङ् in सूत्रम् ३.१.९३ कृदतिङ् (कृत्-अतिङ्). Note कृत्-अतिङ् means that कृत्-प्रत्ययाः are those which are अतिङ् (not तिङ्).

  3. तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः - कृदतिङ् in सूत्रम् ३.१.९३ also means that प्रत्ययाः which affix to धातवः are either कृत् or तिङ्. That means that the words obtainable from धातवः are कृदन्ताः or तिङन्ताः. We have already studied that 18 तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः are enumerated in सूत्रम् ३.४.७८ तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्-तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्.

  4. सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः - As stated earlier सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः affix to प्रातिपदिकानि. But प्रातिपदिकानि are of three main types - nouns, pronouns, adjectives नामानि, सर्वनामानि, विशेषणानि. Of these नामानि have specific लिङ्गम् gender(s). सर्वनामानि and विशेषणानि have all three लिङ्गानि genders.

  5. स्त्रीप्रत्यया: - As mentioned above सर्वनामानि and विशेषणानि have all three genders. Accordingly the सुँबन्ताः in the three genders are also different. One may wonder how that happens when सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः are the same as detailed in the सूत्रम् ४.१.२ स्वौँजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाङ्ङ्योस्सुप्. The answer is that formatting सुँबन्ताः as also कृदन्ताः or तिङन्ताः are basically processes प्रक्रियाः meaning a sequence of actions, not just one action. In the case of स्त्रीलिङ्ग-सुँबन्ताः the process प्रक्रिया starts with a स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम्. That seems to be the logic in recognizing स्त्रीप्रत्यया: as a distinct category of प्रत्यया:. Two common-most स्त्रीप्रत्यया: are ई and आ as mentioned in सूत्रम् ४.१.१ ङ्याप्प्रातिपदिकात् (ङी-आप्-प्रातिपदिकात्).

    1. Note ङी (ङ्+ई) has आदिवर्णः ङ् which is इत् as per सूत्रम् 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and suffers लोपः as per सूत्रम् 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः. ङी is a स्त्रीप्रत्यय: which affixes as ई. For example सत् → सती.

    2. आप् has  हलन्त्यम् प् which is इत् as per सूत्रम् 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and suffers लोपः as per सूत्रम् 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः. आप् is a स्त्रीप्रत्यय: which affixes as . For example गतः → गता.

    3. There are more स्त्रीप्रत्यया:. I shall not get into that.

  6. तद्धित-प्रत्ययाः - More प्रातिपदिकानि are obtained from नामानि, सर्वनामानि, विशेषणानि. For example

    1. The word सार्वनामिक meaning pronominal is an adjectival प्रातिपदिकम् obtained from the word सर्वनाम.

    2. माधुर्यम् is an abstract noun obtained from the adjective मधुरम्

    3. सर्वथा सर्वदा are adverbs obtained from the pronoun सर्व.

    4. गौरी is स्त्रीलिङ्गप्रातिपदिकम् obtained from the विशेषणम् गौर. Note, गौर is विशेषणम् as in गौराङ्ग. This word गौराङ्ग (गौर+अङ्ग) is a compound word which has two meanings (1) गौरम् अङ्गम् इति गौराङ्गम् fair skin (2) गौरम् अङ्गम् यस्य सः गौराङ्गः one, who has fair skin. The second meaning is adjectival.

    5. द्रुपदस्य द्रौपदी is daughter of द्रुपदः. Further on द्रौपद्या: ये ते द्रौपदेयाः i.e. sons of द्रौपदी. So द्रुपदः → द्रौपदी → द्रौपदेयाः

    6. Similarly कुन्ती → कौन्तेयः, धृतराष्ट्रः → धार्तराष्ट्राः

    7. Basically one can compose newer प्रातिपदिकानि from known प्रातिपदिकानि. The newer प्रातिपदिकानि are obtained by use of तद्धित-प्रत्ययाः

    8. Just a point of curiosity “why are तद्धित-प्रत्ययाः called so ?” Note, the word तद्धित is a compound word तत्+हित, तस्मात् हित literally obtained or derived from ‘that’. Here the word ‘that’ means प्रातिपदिकम्. So तद्धितम् is a new प्रातिपदिकम् obtained from an available प्रातिपदिकम्.

    9. In अष्टाध्यायी there is a definition of a प्रातिपदिकम् also. See सूत्रम् १.२.४५ अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम् (अर्थवत् अधातुः अप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम्)

      1. As per this सूत्रम् a प्रातिपदिकम् is अर्थवत् meaningful अधातुः is not a धातुः is अप्रत्ययः without a प्रत्ययः. So प्रातिपदिकम् is that base state of the word before a सुँप्-प्रत्यय: is affixed to it. It is only a सुँप्-प्रत्यय: that will be affixed to it, because it is अधातुः. With सुँप्-प्रत्यय: affixed to it one gets सुँबन्तपदानि (सुँप्-अन्त-पदानि) from a प्रातिपदिकम्.

      2. If a root word is धातुः, not an अधातुः, then being a धातुः one gets तिङन्तम् पदम् from it.

      3. This सूत्रम् १.२.४५ अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम् is further elaborated by the next १.२.४६ कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च (कृत्-तद्धित-समासाः च)

      4. Note these द्वे सूत्रे encompass what all types of words have प्रातिपदिकम् as a root word or a base inherent. The words will be primarily सुँबन्ताः but may also be सुँबन्त-adaptations of कृदन्ताः तद्धिताः or समासाः.

    10. Actually गौरी is स्त्रीलिङ्गम्-adaptation of गौर. Most विशेषणानि have स्त्रीलिङ्गम्-adaptations, which are obtained by affixing various स्त्रीप्रत्ययाः as discussed under (5) above.

All the discussion above sets sort of an unwritten rule that व्याकरणम् of a सुबन्तपदम् should be detailed by

  1. प्रातिपदिकम् whether प्राकृत, कृत्, तद्धित, or सामासिक

  2. जातिः whether नाम, सर्वनाम or विशेषणम्

  3. लिङ्गम् whether पुंल्लिङ्गम्, स्त्रीलिङ्गम् or नपुंसकलिङ्गम्

  4. विभक्तिः - प्रथमा, द्वितीया, etc. including संबोधन-प्रथमा.

  5. वचनम् - whether एक., द्वि. or बहु.

I think above is a good bird’s eye view about प्रत्ययाः. To stay connected with the इत्-सूत्रम् 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते

  • There is कृत्-प्रत्यय: शतृँ. It is not a तद्धितप्रत्यय:. प्रत्ययसंज्ञा शतृँ has initial आदिवर्ण: श् which is इत् as per सूत्रम् 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते. Also तृँ has ऋँ which is अनुनासिक: अच्, which is इत् as per सूत्रम् 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्. Thus शतृँ has द्वौ इतौ श् and ऋँ. Hence शतृँ affixes as अत् only. For example स्पृश्+अत् = स्पृशत्. But गम्+अत् = गच्छत् not गमत्. There is some प्रक्रिया there by which गम् first becomes गच्छ् then अत् affixes to गच्छ्.

  • There is a तद्धितप्रत्यय: शस्. See सूत्रम् ५.४.४२ बह्वल्पार्थाच्छस् कारकादन्यतरस्याम् (बहु-अल्पार्थात् शस् कारकात् अन्यतरस्याम्). Note प्रत्ययसंज्ञा शस् has initial आदिवर्ण: श् which is NOT इत्, because it is a तद्धितप्रत्यय:. प्रत्यय: शस् affixes as शस् only. For example in गीता (११-५) शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः (शतशः अथ सहस्रशः = hundreds and thousands). There is बह्वर्थ: here. There is a सुभाषितम् - क्षणशः कणशश्चैव विद्यामर्थं च साधयेत्. One should gain विद्यामर्थं च knowledge and wealth, क्षणशः moment by moment and कणश: particle by particle. There is अल्पार्थ: here.

Now let us get a bird’s eye view about धातवः. The word धातवः is to be primarily understood from सूत्रम् १.३.१ भूवादयो धातवः (भू-वा-आदयः धातवः).

For a diversion, it is interesting to note the word आदयः, which was there also in सूत्रम् ३-३-१ उणादयो बहुलम् (उण्-आदयः बहुलम्).

Whichever सूत्रम् has the word  आदयः, it suggests that there is a multitude of those grammatical elements. Because the multitude of उण्-आदयः was बहुलम्, they are compiled in a separate appendix परिशिष्टम् known as उणादिपाठ:.

But if the number of elements can be compiled in paragraphs, such compilation of sets गणाः are delineated in गणपाठ:. For example

  1. सूत्रम् १.१.२७ सर्वादीनि सर्वनामानि (सर्व-आदीनि सर्वनामानि). Pronouns सर्वनामानि the grammatical element are mentioned here. सर्वनामानि are as many as 36. They are enumerated in an Appendix called as गणपाठ:. See https://sa.wikisource.org/wiki/अष्टाध्यायी-गणपाठः  Note the word गण: itself means a set. A set has elements. When there are a multitude of elements, they are better enumerated in an appendix. This गण: of सर्वनामानि is called as सर्वादिगण:.

  2. सूत्रम् १.४.५८ प्रादयः (प्र-आदयः) - प्र-आदयः are prefixes, more well known as उपसर्गाः when they prefix धातवः. As enumerated in गणपाठ: they are प्र, परा, अप, सम्, अनु, अव, निस्, निर्, दुस्, दुर्, वि, आङ्,  नि, अधि, अपि, अति, सु, उत्, अभि, प्रति, परि, उप. This गण: of प्रादयः is called as प्रादिगण:.

  3. सूत्रम् १.१.३७ स्वरादिनिपातमव्ययम् (स्वर्-आदि-निपातम् अव्ययम्) Enumerated in this गण: are अव्ययानि starting from स्वर्. Hence this गण: is called as स्वरादिगण:.

  4. सूत्रम् १.४.५७ चादयोऽसत्त्वे (च-आदयः असत्त्वे). More च-आदि अव्ययानि are enumerated in this चादिगण:.

Whereas many गणाः are delineated in गणपाठ:, number of धातवः are 2000+. One can say that धातुपाठ: is गणपाठ: related to the सूत्रम् १.३.१ भूवादयो धातवः.

The धातवः enumerated in धातुपाठ: are again in ten दश धातुगणाः commonly referred to as प्रथमगणः, द्वितीयगणः, …. दशमगणः.

It is important to note that गणाः in गणपाठ: should not be confused with धातुगणाः in धातुपाठ:.

In धातुपाठ: they are (1) भू-आदिः भ्वादिः (2) अद्-आदिः अदादिः (3) हु (जुहोति) hence जुहोत्यादिः (4) दिवादिः (5) सु-आदिः स्वादिः (6) तुदादिः (7) रुधादिः (8) तनादिः (9) क्री-आदिः क्र्यादिः (10) चुरादिः. Obviously the first धातु: in प्रथमगणः is भू.

Let us have a look at how these ten धातवः are detailed in धातुपाठ: as available at https://www.ashtadhyayi.com/dhatu/ Note, the meanings in English are by the author of this website,

०१.०००१ भू भू सत्तायाम् भ्वादिः, परस्मैपदी, अकर्मकः, सेट्  (to exist, to become, to be, to happen)

  • १०.०२७७ भू भू अवकल्कने चुरादिः, उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्  (to mix, to think)

०२.०००१ अद् अदँ भक्षणे अदादिः, परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to eat, to binge)

०३.०००१ हु हु दानादानयोः आदाने प्रीणने च जुहोत्यादिः, परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to sacrifice, to eat, to consume)

०४.०००१ दिव् दिवुँ क्रीडाविजिगीषाव्यवहारद्युतिस्तुतिमोदमदस्वप्नकान्तिगतिषु दिवादिः, परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्  (to play, to gamble, to dice, to desire to win, to transact, to glow, to shine, to praise, to please, to boast, to sleep, to wish, to go)

  • १०.०२३० दिव् दिवुँ परिकूजने चुरादिः, आत्मनेपदी, अकर्मकः, सेट्  (to irritate, to cause pain, to mourn to grieve)

०५.०००१ सु षुञ् अभिषवे स्वादिः, उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to bathe, to extract, to distill, to juice, to agitate, to churn)

  • ०१.१०९१ सु षु प्रसवैश्वर्ययोः भ्वादिः, परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to give birth, to become pregnant, to conceive, to possess power, to possess supremacy)

  • ०२.००३६ सु षु प्रसवैश्वर्ययोः अदादिः, परस्मैपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to give birth, to procreate, to become pregnant, to possess power, to possess supremacy)

०६.०००१ तुद् तुदँ व्यथने तुदादिः, उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to wound, to strike, to pain, to irritate, to hurt, to cause pain, to attack)

०७.०००१ रुध् रुधिँर् आवरणे रुधादिः, उभयपदी, द्विकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to obstruct, to surround, to besiege, to enclose, to obscure)

  • ०४.००७० रुध् रुधँ कामे दिवादिः, आत्मनेपदी, अकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to pitty, to be compassionate, to agree, to approve, to mourn, to grieve, to desire, to wish)

०८.०००१ तन् तनुँ विस्तारे तनादिः, उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्  (to spread, to stretch, to expand, to increase)

  • १०.०३७७ तन् तनुँ श्रद्धोपकरणयोः चुरादिः, उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्  (to believe, to have faith, to provide shelter, to help, to sound, to kill, to destroy, to hurt)

०९.०००१ क्री डुक्रीञ् द्रव्यविनिमये क्र्यादिः, उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, अनिट्  (to buy, to purchase)

१०.०००१ चुर् चुरँ स्तेये चुरादिः, उभयपदी, सकर्मकः, सेट्  (to steal)

Every धातु: is detailed in a pattern.

  1. First two digits धातुगण:

    1. If there are more than one धातुगण-variants of a धातु:, the additional variants are bulleted. See (1), (4), (5), (7), (8)

  2. Next four digits धातुक्रमाङ्कः in the धातुगण:

  3. धातु: with इतः elided

  4. व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा of the धातुः with इतः

    1. If व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा of the धातुः has no इतः, then (3) and (4) are identical as in (1) and (3)

  5. धात्वर्थः सप्तम्याम्

    1. Note सप्तमी summarises the sense “in the instance of such and such meaning or action”.

    2. If there are two meanings of a धातुः then there is सप्तमी-द्विवचनम् of the धात्वर्थशब्दौ e.g. ०३.०००१ हु हु दानादानयोः

    3. If there are more than two meanings of a धातुः then there is बहुवचनम् of the धात्वर्थशब्दौ

  6. व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा of the धातुगण:

    1. Note व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा जुहोत्यादि: of the तृतीयः धातुगण: is different from others.

  7. पदविवरणम् of the धातुः - परस्मैपदम् आत्मनेपदम् उभयपदम् वा

  8. अकर्मकः सकर्मकः वा

  9. सेट् (स-इट्) अनिट् (अन्-इट्) वेट् (वा-इट्).

    1. Note इट् is a व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा composed having ट् which is हलन्त्यम् and hence is an इत्. But this हलन्त्यम् ट् is sort of a code denoting those व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा:, rather, those grammatical elements which get added extra.

    2. Accordingly इट् means इ is a grammatical element which gets added extra, especially in the formatting लृट्-तिङन्ताः of the धातुः.

    3. So सेट् means that the formatting happens with इ added extra.

    4. अनिट् means that the formatting happens with इ NOT added extra.

    5. वेट् means that the formatting happens or does not happen with इ added extra.

  10. आङ्ग्लायामर्थः meaning(s) in English

It is item (4) व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा of the धातुः with इतः that is relevant in the context of the सूत्रम् 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते. Actually धातवः are अतद्धिताः only. Hence whatever लशकु be there as आदिवर्णाः in the व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा: of धातवः, they qualify to be इतः and in turn qualify to suffer लोपः as per सूत्रम् 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः.

By the way item (9) सेट् अनिट् वेट् prompts us to understand another essential basic, the topic of आगमाः grammatical elements which get added extra.

We may rather take a pause. Note, this suggestion to take a pause implies that students should read, reread and digest what all essential basics have been discussed thus far.

शुभमस्तु !
