Essential Basics Before Embarking on studying अष्टाध्यायी

Notes By अष्टाध्यायी-Student S. L. Abhyankar

===============

To understand सूत्रम् 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः we need to also study

सूत्रम् ४.१.२ स्वौँजसमौच्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाङ्ङ्योस्सुप्

पदपाठः - सुँ, औच्, अस्, अम्, औच्, शस्, टा, भ्याम्, भिस्, ङे, भ्याम्, भ्यस्, ङसिँ, भ्याम्, भ्यस्, ङस्, ओस्, आम्, ङि, ओस्, सुप्. Note all have १/१.

In पदपाठः are identified 21 प्रत्ययाः, 7 sets of three प्रत्ययाः each.

It will be good to study these in 3 tabulations.

It was noted that from सूत्रम् ३.४.७८ तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्-तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् one gets a व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा तिङ् conforming to सूत्रम् (1-1-71) आदिरन्त्येन सहेता.

From  सूत्रम् ४.१.२ स्वौँजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाङ्ङ्योस्सुप् one gets व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा सुँप्

There is सूत्रम् १.४.१४ सुँप्तिङन्तं पदम् (सुँप्-तिङ्-अन्तम् पदम्) which refers to both सुँप् and तिङ्.

It should be interesting to dwell a while on this सूत्रम् especially on the word पदम्. In a way this सूत्रम् is a definition of व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा पदम्. The definition is “पदम् is what has at its ending either सुप् or तिङ्”.

But it is well taken that पदम् is any word in a phrase or sentence. In turn, we have to understand it as a rule that any word cannot be a part of a phrase or sentence, unless it has at its ending either सुप् or तिङ्.

Basically the thought that a word पदम् must have at its ending either सुप् or तिङ् means that every word पदम् must be a formatted word. This is true for every actor that the actor must have makeup appropriate to the role. Actors with appropriate makeup get freedom to move about the stage.  Similarly words properly formatted get freedom from syntax. Sanskrit has great freedom from syntax by virtue of the grammatical rule सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् that every word पदम् must be a formatted word. That has facilitated much of the Sanskrit literature to be verses. This has made it easy to commit them to memory.

With this important interlude about पदम् let us get back to the 8 इत्-सूत्राणि ⇒

We have to proceed with इत्-सूत्राणि (1-3-5) to (1-3-8).

सूत्रम् 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः

पदपाठः - आदिः १/१ ञिटुडवः १/३

अनुवृत्ति: - उपदेशे १/३/२, इत् १/३/२

अन्वयार्थः -

  • उपदेशे in व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा of an उपदेश-word,

  • if आदिः initial letter आद्याक्षरम्

  • ञि, or टु, or डु

  • then that letter (is) इत्.

For example

  • व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा of धातुः कृ (to do) is डुकृञ्. This डुकृञ् has the initial डु which is इत्.

  • The ending ञ् is also अन्त्य हल्. So, both डु and ञ् are इतौ. Note, I have used इतौ as द्विवचनम् of इत्.

Note there is the word आदिः which is अनुवर्तनीयः in सूत्राणि up to (१/३/८).

The next सूत्रम् 1-3-6 षः प्रत्ययस्य

पदपाठः - षः १/१ प्रत्ययस्य ६/१

अनुवृत्ति: - उपदेशे १/३/२, इत् १/३/२, आदिः (१/३/५)

अन्वयार्थः -

  • उपदेशे in व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा of an उपदेश-word,

  • प्रत्ययस्य when the उपदेश-word is a प्रत्यय:

  • And that प्रत्यय: has आदिः initial letter आद्याक्षरम्

  • षः the consonant ष्

  • That ष् is इत्

An eminent example is सूत्रम् ३.२.१५५ जल्पभिक्षकुट्टलुण्टवृङः षाकन् which is regarding प्रत्यय: षाकन्, which has initial ष्, which is इत्. The ending न् in षाकन् is also अन्त्य हल्. षाकन् also has द्वौ इतौ - ष् and न्. The प्रत्यय: षाकन् affixes as ‘आक’.

  • See in देव्यपराधक्षमापनस्तोत्रम् of श्रीमच्छ्ङ्कराचार्य: “श्वपाको जल्पाको भवति मधुपाकोपमगिरा । निरातंको रंको विहरति चिरं कोटिकनकै:।” Note जल्प्+आक = जल्पाक means who prattles, is a chatterbox.

  • In a सुभाषितम् also “सद्विद्या यदि का चिन्ता वराकोदरपूरणे । शुकोऽप्यशनमाप्नोति राम-रामेति च ब्रुवन्।” Note वृ+आक = वराक means a species, which has something special मनुष्यप्राणी.

The next सूत्रम् 1-3-7 चुटू

पदपाठः - चुटू १/२

अनुवृत्ति: - उपदेशे १/३/२, इत् १/३/२, आदिः (१/३/५)

अन्वयार्थः - उपदेशे चुटू आदी इतौ

As mentioned earlier I have modified the words इत् and आदिः to their द्विवचनम् because they are related with चुटू, which has द्विवचनम्. Note टू in चुटू is दीर्घ: because it is द्विवचनम्. अष्टाध्यायी merits to be studied as minutely.

चुटू is a compound word चु च टु च इति चुटू (इतरेतर-द्वन्द्वः) meaning both चु and टु

Note चु is a व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा for the च-वर्ग: i.e. for वर्णाः च्, छ्, ज्, झ् and ञ्. Likewise टु is a व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा for the ट-वर्ग: i.e. for वर्णाः ट्, ठ्, ड्, ढ्, and ण्.

How does one know this ? It wasn’t easy for me.

For those who are interested may study सूत्रम् १.१.६९ अणुदित् सवर्णस्य चाप्रत्ययः.

No, I do not plan to study this सूत्रम् also here. May it suffice to say that there are five व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा: कु-चु-टु-तु-पु

The five संज्ञा: कु-चु-टु-तु-पु are to be interpreted to mean not only the five sets but also as एकैकशः every singular व्यञ्जनम् of the particular set.  The five संज्ञा: is again data-crunching of five वर्णाः in the five letters कु-चु-टु-तु-पु.

The meaning of the सूत्रम् 1-3-7 चुटू is that if any व्याकरणीयसंज्ञा of an उपदेश-word has its beginning, its initial, its आदिवर्ण: a व्यञ्जनम् from च्-वर्ग: or ट्-वर्ग: then that व्यञ्जनम् is to be considered to be इत्.

To understand this by examples see सूत्रम् ४.१.२ स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा… has an element टा having initial ट्, which is  इत्.

There is a finer point to be noted. In डुकृञ् there is initial डु which belongs to ट्-वर्ग:. By the सूत्रम् 1-3-7 चुटू out of डु in डुकृञ् only ड् becomes इत्. But by सूत्रम्  1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः complete डु becomes इत्. सूत्रम्  1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः is exactly to make the complete letters ञि, टु, डु to be इत:.

In सूत्रम् ३.४.७८ तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्-तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् there are झि and झ which have आदिवर्ण: झ् which is of च्-वर्ग:, is hence an इत् as per this सूत्रम् 1-3-7 चुटू.

Now next सूत्रम् 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते

पदपाठः - (ल, श, कु)-अतद्धिते Note लशक्वतद्धिते is a compound word. For विभक्ति-वचन-analysis, the compound word has to be first deciphered. It would be good to do that as a part of अन्वयार्थ-study.

अनुवृत्ति: - उपदेशे १/३/२, इत् १/३/२, आदिः (१/३/५)

अन्वयार्थः -

if the उपदेश: is NOT a तद्धितप्रत्यय: if the संज्ञा of the उपदेश: has initial वर्ण: ल् or श or any व्यञ्जनम् of कवर्ग: then such वर्ण: is to be considered to be इत्.

Since the सूत्रम् speaks of प्रत्यय: to be NOT a तद्धितप्रत्यय:, it becomes an essential basic to know

  1. what a प्रत्यय: is,

  2. what are types of प्रत्ययाः and

  3. What a तद्धितप्रत्यय: is

  4. What instances can be sighted where (ल, श, कु) are इत: because the प्रत्यय: is NOT a तद्धितप्रत्यय:

  5. What instances can be sighted where (ल, श, कु) are NOT इत: because the प्रत्यय: is a तद्धितप्रत्यय:.

Let us take the above points one by one. Firstly “What is a प्रत्यय: ?” We studied सूत्रम् १.४.१४ सुँप्तिङन्तं पदम् (सुँप्-तिङ्-अन्तम् पदम्) and also about सुँप् and तिङ् in सूत्रम् ४.१.२ स्वौँजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाङ्ङ्योस्सुप् and सूत्रम् ३.४.७८ तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्-तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्

There are 21 सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः and 18 तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः, so totally 39 विभक्ति-प्रत्ययाः, obtaining innumerable सुबन्तपदानि and तिङन्तपदानि.

  • The root words to which सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः are suffixed are called as प्रातिपदिकानि

  • The root words to which तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः are suffixed are called as धातवः

The word अन्तम् in सुँप्-तिङ्-अन्तम् पदम् may give an impression that प्रत्ययाः are suffixes which are affixed at the end of प्रातिपदिकानि and धातवः. All प्रत्ययाः are not like that, सुँप्- and तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः are.

See सूत्रम् says १.२.४५ अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम्.

For धातवः see १.३.१ भूवादयो धातवः and ३.१.३२ सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

Actually the mention of the words, especially प्रत्ययाः and धातवः takes us into two very, very wide realms of संस्कृतव्याकरणम् and hence of अष्टाध्यायी also.

Not to forget that these prompts for learning about प्रत्ययाः and धातवः have cropped up when studying सूत्रम् 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते.

It is time to take a pause before taking a bird’s eye view study of प्रत्ययाः and धातवः keeping it connected with सूत्रम् 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते

शुभमस्तु !
